Section 4 - Predicting Monthly Variations in Canada's Imports
Canada grows many different types of fruits and vegetables. But because of the climate, these fruits and vegetables cannot be grown during the winter months. This means that Canadians are dependent on food imports during the winter months.
1 Print the Predicting Monthly Variations in Canada's Imports worksheet. Complete Step 1 of the worksheet.
2 To complete Step 2 of the worksheet, you must retrieve the correct data table from the Statistics Canada website. Follow the steps closely.
  1. Press the English button.
  2. Select Table of Contents from the menu on the left.
  3. If prompted, enter the login (granderie) and password (estat).
  4. Select the Data tab.
  5. Select Trade under the Economy section.
  6. Select Imports.
  7. Select table 228-0001.
  8. Under Geography select Canada.
  9. Under Basis select Customs.
  10. Under Seasonal Adjustment select Unadjusted.
  11. Under Import and export major commodity groups select Imports, Major group 2.3 Fresh Fruits and berries and Imports, Major group 3.5 Crude vegetable products. Hold down the Ctrl button on the keyboard to make multiple selections.
  12. Set the reference period for Jan. 2003 to Dec. 2003.
  13. Press the Retrieve as a Table button. This will take you to the next page.
  14. Press the Retrieve Now button.
3 Now create a graph of Imports of Fruits and Vegetables using the Statistics Canada website. Follow the steps closely.
  1. Press the English button.
  2. Select Table of Contents from the menu on the left.
  3. If prompted, enter the login (granderie) and password (estat).
  4. Select the Data tab.
  5. Select Trade under the Economy section.
  6. Select Imports.
  7. Select table 228-0001.
  8. Under Geography select Canada.
  9. Under Basis select Customs.
  10. Under Seasonal Adjustment select Unadjusted.
  11. Under Import and export major commodity groups select Imports, Major group 2.3 Fresh Fruits and berries and Imports, Major group 3.5 Crude vegetable products. Hold down the Ctrl button on the keyboard to make multiple selections.
  12. Set the reference period for Jan. 2000 to the most recent month.
  13. Press the Retrieve as Individual Time Series button. This will take you to the next page.
  14. Press the Retrieve Now button.
  15. Press the Modify Graphic button.
  16. Enter an appropriate title for the graph and then press the Replot button.
  17. Click on the Printer-friendly format link at the bottom of the page and then print the graph.
